Magic in Ancients is structured in four different ways: Earthly or Divine, by Element, by Level, and by Precedence. First well talk about the difference between Earthly and Divine Magics.
The biggest difference between Divine and Earthly energies are the origin of said energy. All Earthly magics are derived from sources found in the physical world, even in esoteric forms; that is why Gravity is an Earthly magic. If one can wander on this Earth, or wander the Cosmo’s, and find creatures of things that, as a result of evolution, can manipulate, create, or are impervious to an element, it is considered Earthly. Most Elements fall under this Earthly Energy. It is relatively easy to use Earthly magics as compared to Divine magics. These rules are immutable and impossible to bend; every single Earthly element follow these strictly. If there is an element that does not, it does qualify as divine.
The rules for Earthly Magic are simple
Divine Energy, on the other hand, follow either none or only some of these rules. For the most part, Divine Energy does not exist in the natural order of the universe, found only in Divine Realms or, very rarely, in Magical places, Artifacts, or beings. No matter the source, Divine Energy cannot be contained by Earthly magics. While Divine Artifacts do exist, they are very rare and very powerful. An example would be The Jesuit Spear, which has the power to do almost anything the wielder wants, or the Holy Grail, which can cure any wound, bring back the dead, and even grant immortality. Divine Energy works on the very fundamental structure of the universe; it was these energies and magics the First Gods used to create every atom in the Cosmos.
And now, let’s get down to the nitty-gritty.
All Magic is divided into five different levels, with level one being the lowest and level five being the highest. There are no exceptions to this rule. The Levels determine the effect and power of the spell in typical situations, how difficult the spell is to learn, and the amount of experience necessary to earn the spell.

The rules for Earthly Magic are simple
- 1.) It must be found in some capacity in nature.
- 2.) It cannot be conjured out of nothingness. While some magicks, such as Fire and Cold, can be seemingly manipulated out of nowhere, in reality the potential for these exist in all places. Others, such as Earth and Water, require a pre-existing source to manipulate.
- 3.) Earthly magic can be contained inside containers, such as Artifacts, to use at any point. Containing this magic just requires the container and a powerful enough sealing ritual or spell.
- 4.) Earthly magics don’t necessarily require natural talent; hard work and dedication can just as easily teach a Sorcerer as much as natural talent can, and any sorcerer can learn this ability.
Divine Energy, on the other hand, follow either none or only some of these rules. An Explanation of Levels and Precedence
All Magic is divided into five different levels, with level one being the lowest and level five being the highest. There are no exceptions to this rule. The Levels determine the effect and power of the spell in typical situations, how difficult the spell is to learn, and the amount of experience necessary to earn the spell.
- Level 1 - The lowest and most common level, Level 1 spells are found everywhere. Enchanted lights, self-sweeping brooms, and other utilitarian spells are all level 1. Very rarely will these spells have any combat application, instead remaining on the aesthetic or utilitarian side. Despite this, Level 1 spells tend to contain the fundamentals to learn higher leveled spells.
Ex. A simple fire spell that can light stoves. - Level 2 - Spells can finally be used in combat situations, harnessing more Energy and costing more to use. Spells of this level are still basic, but are most of the time the bread-and-butter of a magicians arsenal, providing many of the spells they may use in their various duties. If used as a utilitarian spell, more complex effects can be applied, and more at once. Combat applications are pretty simple, and usually direct. Level 2 spells tend to be the most used spells in low-to-mid range for a magician or sorcerer, as they have low energy-effect ratio.
Ex. A casted fireball that can cause burns. - Level 3 - This is where things start to get serious. Level 3 spells can worry even seasoned warriors, as they are typically hard earned spells with powerful effects. These spells, while mid-range, tend to be more than enough to end most fights with their use. However, despite their power, they also come with some pretty heavy drawbacks. This is as high as purely utilitarian spells can do, though by this point they can be pretty much anything. Combat applications are wide and varied; a swarm of fire, or a large exploding ball of flame. The opportunities are endless here.
EX. A blade conjured from flame that can cut through most materials. - Level 4 - The highest level most magicians hope to achieve. The usage of a Level 4 spell signifies either desperate times or a powerful opponent; while the effects are powerful and typically long-lasting, the drawbacks tend to make a user weary, as they can be quite severe and varied. Most Level 4 spells typically require both hand gestures and a vocal component; they are too powerful and require too much energy to be used raw. Despite this, Level 4 spells can have effects that can leave lasting effects on the land, powerful enough destroy nearly anything.
EX. a huge pillar of fire capable of annihilating much of the surrounding area - Level 5 - The highest level magic available to any being, God or not. Level 5 magics are the sole property of gods or god-like beings, spells that can alter the fabric of the landscape for centuries to come. Even Sky Fathers are weary when it comes to this level of spell, as the drawbacks and requirements are the most severe. Whether it’s a requirement of a blood sacrifice, souls of men, or the blood of a virgin, they are typically esoteric, dangerous, and difficult to acquire. Very, very few Level 5 spells don’t require both a physical and a vocal component, and typically the incantation is at least a sentence, if not longer. Spells of this power can wipe out entire towns or cities if the caster wants. Spells of this level will be judged harshly. This is the level most Sorcerer’s wish to attain.
EX. A storm of fire enveloping miles, immolating all life in it’s circumference.
