The Gods landed about 100 years ago in the desert with very little idea of where they were or how they got there, why they were there or who they were. However, after doing a large amount of research they discovered their true abilities. At first; these deities were a small group consisting of Perun, Zeus, Odin, Ra, and Amaterasu. Eventually, however, this small group began to grow into a massive undertaking.
The gods have split apart all over the world; however, the largest portion remained in Caliente. Caliente in the meantime began growing; humans becoming attracted to the area, unconsciously even. Almost as if it was encoded into their DNA to go where the gods go. The more powerful the god; the more the humans flocked to that area. Some people, however, were tricked into believing in "false gods" such as the North Korean royal family. They worshiped these men, and they did gain a small modicum of power. Even if it wasn't very much.
In the mean time; Caliente grew larger and larger; and with an outpouring of strange reports coming from New Mexico, the government took a large interest in Caliente. In 1947 a very powerful god crashed down in Roswell, New Mexico. Some say it was Loki; others say it was the reincarnation of Apophis or another apocalyptic deity, but everyone agrees on one thing. Things started getting much weirder around Caliente.
Certain humans became gods at age 21; while others stayed human as could be. Strange black cars started showing up with men in the backseat watching the most obvious gods. The ones who either couldn't or wouldn't control their powers. Those gods started to disappear; some reported that they were taken. Later they'd be reborn with no clear memory of what happened. But the host was clearly dead. Eventually, in the 1970s, Odin, and his fellow pantheon leaders all sat around a table and agreed. The gods were not to use their abilities in the midst of town unless they were so passive it'd be impossible to notice.
Gods like Cernunnos who had certain physical malformations were forced to live in the woods, and Tricksters were almost always thrown in jail before they could cause too much trouble. This was a dark time for the gods. However; in 1990 the black cars finally began disappearing. The gods were finally able to live in relative safety. Gods like Cernnunos and the Egyptians could finally return to modern life, with the precaution of getting glamor's placed on their bodies so that the humans wouldn't be able to tell the difference between one of them and the other.
Gods like the White Buffalo Lady were able to open businesses and create safe zones. But most importantly; the gods could finally be somewhat normal. However, now there is a problem. Feuding pantheons and gods are causing rifts in the community, not to mention the new gods are starting to gain power. The gods will need to fight once again. But not for relevance or privacy; but for survival
However; the gods weren't the only ones affected by the fall. The Fae queens are also greatly affected by the fall and as are the fae themselves. The Fae queens fell and are now MIA. As such; the Seelie and Unseelie fae have called for a ceasefire, at least until they find the Queens. Meanwhile; the Lords, the Ladies, and the Matrons are forced to keep the balance between summer and winter until the queens are found. Summer seems to be keeping a tight grip on Winter right now, but Winter may make a comeback. Currently, the fae of both courts are searching for the queens, but over the past 100 years, no one has seen hide nor hair of them.
Magic has taken some modicum of control in the modern world, creating chaos in many parts of the world. Sorcerers have been born. Characters from books have started to appear all over the place, and can only be killed similar to how their books ended. Humans with powers granted to them by the Gods have been born; calling themselves Gifted, while other humans with no ties to magic or the strands of fate at all have also been born; being called the Pristinely Ungifted.
